Young Maylay's voice acting breakthrough came unexpectedly in 2004 when DJ Pooh, a Rockstar Games collaborator, overheard him during a casual call and urged him to audition for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. With no prior acting experience, Maylay landed the role of Carl "CJ" Johnson, the game's protagonist, providing voice work, likeness, and motion capture. He recorded over 7,700 lines—more than 3,500 in cutscenes and 4,200 in open-world interactions—adapting CJ's voice for variables like weight gain.
The role, alongside stars like Samuel L. Jackson and Ice Cube, propelled San Andreas to massive success, earning Maylay a 2005 G-Phoria nomination for Best Voice Performance – Male and cementing CJ as a top video game character. Beyond GTA, his video game credits are limited, though he contributed to the 2005 expansion Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – The Introduction.
Young Maylay began his rap career in 2000 at age 21. With support from King T, he debuted on Killa Tay's track "#1 Hottest Coast (Killa Cali)" from the album Thug Thistle. He later formed the rap trio OBG Rider Clicc with Young Dre The Truth and Killa Polk, appearing on Dre's 2002 album Revolution In Progress The Movement.
Maylay's solo efforts included collaborations on Deeyah's 2006 single "What Will It Be" and DJ Crazy Toones' CT Experience, culminating in his 2007 album The Real Coast Guard with WC and Toones. In 2005, he released the mixtape San Andreas: The Original Mixtape under his own label, Malaynium Muziq, inspired by his burgeoning voice acting fame.
