In Gaming and voice acting, Downie made a splash with his debut performance as Gale Dekarios—the charismatic, erudite wizard of Waterdeep—in Larian Studios' critically acclaimed RPG Baldur's Gate 3 (2023). His nuanced delivery, blending wit, vulnerability, and grandeur, earned widespread praise from players and critics, helping elevate Gale to one of the game's most beloved companions. Downie reprised the role in animated shorts and D&D livestreams.

On screen, Downie is recognized for memorable roles in acclaimed productions. He portrayed Governor William Tryon in the historical fantasy series Outlander, Christopher "Kit" Marlowe in the BBC's Shakespearean comedy Upstart Crow, and Danny Bear in the cult hit Toast of London (and its sequel Toast of Tinseltown).
